TYRENDARRA has had another strong win in round two of the competition, defeating an improved Heywood side on Saturday night, 73-38.
It was a steady start for both sides with Tyrendarra earning an early jump with some tough defensive pressure down the court to lead 19-9.
Heywood built into the second term with goaler Rhi Davis offering a consistent attacking option and shooting with pinpoint accuracy to keep the Lions within touch at half time, 34-19.
The third quarter was the most dominant for Tyrendarra with both goaling options in Hannah Van Gemst and Eliza Alexander offering strong targets to pile on 21 goals to Heywood’s seven.
Heywood defender Tyleah Barr applied some tough pressure in the defensive end but Tyrendarra continued to push in the final quarter to earn the 35-goal win.
Giants rectify slow start against Maroons
Reigning premiers Dartmoor continued their strong start to the season on Saturday, defeating Coleraine 46-34 in round two of the South West District Netball League.
It was a solid win for the Giants, but a slow start put them on the back foot early, with Coleraine firing in the first term to hit a 13-9 lead.
Coleraine defenders Casey Pye and Kate Vickery caused plenty of disruption early to stem Dartmoor’s flow.
Despite the slow start Dartmoor lifted in the second quarter, making better decisions with the ball to level the scores to 22-all by half time.
“Coleraine got the jump on us early and we weren’t really prepared as well as we should have been,” Dartmoor coach Leesa Logan said.
“Our first game we were able to attack pretty quickly and easily so I don’t think the girls were really ready for what Coleraine threw at us.
“To their credit they managed to regain composure after that first quarter and really get back into the game so that was pleasing.”
Nicola Collins was a key for the Giants in defence, earning plenty of ball back across the second half with Marlee Gartlan and Danielle Vankalken converting consistently in attack.
Dartmoor held a five-goal lead heading into the final term where they put their foot down to push the lead out to 12.
“We were able to be more efficient with the ball in that second quarter and the girls were coming forward more,” Logan said.
“The pressure stepped up too and it felt like it was our first real test to get to know each other out on court with a lot of the girls being new.
“Nicola played really well in defence; she was great. Marlee was consistent for us as well and Danielle is always really strong in there, so it was a great result for the team.”
Meres build momentum with second win
Heathmere has continued its resurgence in the A grade competition with a win against consistent contenders Cavendish on Saturday, 45-40.
Both sides took some time to work into the game with Cavendish holding just a one-goal lead at the first break.
With Cavendish’s attacking end operating through the work of stalwart shooter Marni Luhrs, the Meres worked to cut the ball off through the middle and managed to hit the lead by one goal at half time.
A solid third quarter from Heathmere pushed their lead out again slightly with Jess Cook providing a strong target in goal shooter and offering easy passage into the circle.
The Meres continued to build into the final quarter, working the score out to a five-goal lead and earning them another four points for the ladder.
Cavendish coach Leanne Perry said it was a tough result but at the early stage in their season they are looking to clean up the small mistakes.
“We just did some silly things like our passing and getting that right which we can work on,” she said.
“Jess Cook was a clear stand out for them, she worked under the ring really well and offered a lot in the circle.
“For us I think with such a new team everyone is a bit timid to just get in there and have a go, take that give and go and work the space rather than be hesitant in a couple of places.
“It was disappointing to lose but it’s early days, so we just want to make sure we keep building.”
Roos lock in victory against Saints
With great conditions for netball on Saturday and both Westerns and Branxholme-Wallacedale vying for their first win the game was a hard-fought contest with the Roos earning a dominant 71-16 victory.
The Saints welcomed back a few of their A grade players this week after missing last week due to other commitments while Westerns young goalie Sienna Stone and Kelsey England worked well together in the circle and were causing some headaches for the Branxholme defence.
The score at quarter time saw Westerns take a handy lead 21 to 3.
Branxholme’s Coach Rose Wombwell made some changes to her defensive end and this seemed to stem the flow of goaling opportunities. The score at half time saw Westerns have a 27-goal lead.
Westerns made quite a few changes heading into the third quarter. The contest between the two centre players with the Saints midcourter Georgie Gough and Westerns Rachael Gleeson offering fast paced attack and determination.
Both sides fought for every ball right to the final whistle and the final score saw Westerns 71 defeat Branxholme Wallacedale 16.
