Giant first quarter holds off Roos

DARTMOOR held off a strong Westerns outfit on Saturday to claim a 61-52 win in round three of the South West District Netball League competition.

There were some thrilling match ups across the court with Westerns welcoming some new faces into their line up with Alana Strom hitting the court for her first game of the season in defence.

A first quarter surge from the Giants put them in poll position as they moved away to a 21-12 lead with some strong attacking work from Danielle Vankalken and Marlee Gartlan.

The Roos settled into the second term and managed to find some ball defensively through the midcourt to bring the margin to eight goals at half time.

In the third quarter the Giants lifted again with Nicola Collins playing a key role in goal defence to nullify Westerns ability to attack.

Heading into the fourth quarter Dartmoor held an 11-goal lead and while the final term played out evenly, the Giants early push saw them take out the win.

Gartlen was named best for the Giants while Westerns’ strong shooting target Sienna Stone was awarded their best player for the day.

Darras topple Heathmere

Tyrendarra had another solid win on Saturday, defeating the competition’s newest contenders in Heathmere, 72-41.

It was an even first half with Heathmere shooters Jess Cook and Steph Evans offering dominant targets in the circle and precision shooting, with Tyrendarra leading by just three goals, 16-13.

Tyrendarra made some adjustments on court in the second term to open up the court in transition and managed to convert some key turnover ball to push the margin out to eight goals.

The second half saw the Darras find another gear as they were able to win back the ball through pressure on the transverse line and convert through shooting targets Hannah Van Gemst and Eliza Alexander.

The Meres continued to apply strong pressure throughout the fourth quarter, but Tyrendarra continued to push the lead out and secure the 31-goal win.

Coleraine lock in big win against Heywood

Coleraine has secured its first win of the season with a dominant victory against Heywood on Saturday, 60-38.

It was an evenly contested match in the first half with both sides taking some time to work into their attack.

The Lions managed to edge out to a two-goal lead at the end of the first quarter with Rhi Davis continuing her impressive season as a key option in attack.

The lead was short-lived for Heywood as Coleraine settled into its attacking line up and ramped up the defensive pressure.

The Maroons found easy passage into the goal circle with Amy Lewis providing a strong presence in goal shooter.

A third quarter onslaught from Coleraine saw them pile on 19 goals and limit Heywood to just seven to push the game out of reach.

Solid win for Cavendish

Games between Cavendish and Branxholme-Wallacedale are always hard-fought contests and Saturday’s match was no different.

Both sides started well with the Saints winning the toss and taking the first centre, with the Bloods having an altered line up in goals this week with young Neve McClure working with the experienced Carly Behncke and moving Marni Luhrs to Wing Attack who fed her goalies beautifully.

The score at quarter time saw Cavendish up 13-6 as neither side made a change at the quarter break.

The Bloods quickly moved into a steady rhythm and transitioned the ball from defence to attack through strong defensive pressure from Rachel Mibus and Brooke Gordon.

The score at half time saw the Bloods take a handy lead 24 to 11.

Both sides made changes at half time and coming from the break the Saints young goalie Issy Tonissen hit her straps shooting nine goals straight and was supported by fellow goalie Georgia Muldoon.

The score at three quarter time saw the Bloods take a 21-goal lead into the final quarter.

Cavendish finished the game strongly to take the win 50 to 23.
