Bloods await the Kangaroos

THE Hamilton Kangaroos will take to the court for the last time at Hawkesdale Recreation Reserve today, with the team facing Terang-Mortlake in Hampden Football Netball League round six action.

Coming off a loss to North Warrnambool Eagles last week, the team will be keen to bounce back and put their hard work at training into action.

Roos coach, Emma Sommerville said the speed of the game was faster last week, prompting the team to work on some strategies related to that at training this week in preparation for the Bloods this afternoon.

“Last week North was very quick and we probably weren’t quite ready for it,” she said.

“The girls probably didn’t respond quite as well to the feedback and strategies, so we worked hard on that at training.

“Terang-Mortlake is going really well and it will be a good challenge for us.”

Sommerville is still six weeks away from getting back onto the court, nursing an ankle injury, while gun midcourter, Kellie Sommerville, is also in doubt for the clash.

With Ella Sevior thrown back into defence with the loss of Emma, the goal circle combination will continue to be fine-tuned along the way.

“We are still making changes and using that rolling sub quite a bit,” Sommerville said.

“It gives the younger girls more of a crack, it is not the worst thing in the world with what we’ve been working on during the season.”

While missing games, focusing on coaching and structures has allowed Sommerville to fast track the development of the younger girls, in what has been a year full of learning for the young side.

“Being on the sideline coach, working through so much with the young girls, it is quite handy being on the side and being able to give them more feedback,” Sommerville said.
