HAMILTON Kangaroos are yet to register their first win of the year in the Hampden Football Netball League (HFNL) Open netball division, however, there has been plenty to be excited about with the young side showing development and improvement in every game.
The blue and white have fallen to a season record of 0-9 with an average losing margin of 25 goals and a lowly percentage of 57.81.
These numbers have them sitting on the bottom of the ladder, but the young players are coming along in leaps and bounds.
There have been a couple of really good opportunities for the team to get their first win on the board, however they have gone begging.
Losses in single margins have come against Portland (seven goals) and Terang-Mortlake (nine goals), Hamilton will be looking to get on the other side of the outcome when they meet these teams again.
As the halfway point of the season neared closer, the Roos put up some brave efforts against Koroit and Warrnambool managing to match them for patches.
There are some young sides in the competition, but Hamilton Kangaroos are the most prominent of these with a stack of junior talent.
You learn more from your losses than your wins and this will be the silver-lining for the side as the season progresses.
Coach, Emma Sommerville won’t be thinking about the 0-9 record too much, the focus will instead be on development, enjoyment and being competitive.
You only have to look as far as the side’s captain, Ella Sevior who is just 17 to see the Kangaroos are building nicely for the future.
Grace Cleaver, Imogen Thomas (17-and-Under) and Saskia Gould (15-and-Under) have been huge contributors for the open side while also playing juniors.
Gould has proved herself as one of the competition’s rising stars shooting 146 goals this season, while Mimi Chun was another youngster on fire before she suffered injury.
But perhaps the most impressive of them all is Maddox Ryan who is just 14 years old and has gone from playing 13-and-Under netball to playing open netball – jumping all divisions in between and excelling as one of Hamilton’s best.
Clare Crawford is one of the more experienced players on the court and has been in the best five times assisting Gould in the goal ring.
Hamilton Kangaroos will be chasing consistency over four quarters to stay in games for longer and try to pinch a win or two in the second half of the season.
