Blue and White continue youth policy

HAMILTON KANGAROOS will travel to Leura Oval in Camperdown to do battle continue to promote its youth for the remainder of the Hampden Football Netball League season as the club looks to build a squad of talented youngsters who will stand the club in good stead for the foreseeable future.

Young goaler, Saskia Gould has been learning from Clare Crawford under the hoop and is going to be even more of a future star than she is already, as she and Crawford average 35 plus goals per game between them.

Ella Sevior missed last round after falling ill, but before that she had represented the Hampden FNL in the championship winning Open squad.

Sevior will no doubt be around the club for the next few years (as will the majority of this young squad) and will look to make the side her own with her leadership and higher level experience.

Kangaroos coach, Emma Sommerville was happy to discuss the progress of her young chargers.

“It's difficult to quantify the progress as a team as we've had so many players out throughout the season but individually the juniors have come so far during the season,” Sommerville said.

“They are understanding their roles more on the court and each week they get stronger and more confident.

The latest debut was that of Phoebe Dunn last round and she joins the long list of Open grade debutants this season.

“It was great having Phoebe step up into the side last week and she's with us again this week,” the coach said.

“We didn't get a training in with her, so all the feedback was given to her just before and during the game which she executed beautifully.

“Defence is definitely key; Camperdown always have high accuracy in the goal ring so shutting that down early is crucial.”

Kellie Sommerville and Mimi Chun are out for today’s game, but Ella Sevior and Emma Sommerville are potentially returning this week but will depend on how they recover from training this week.

HAMILTON KANGAROOS is on the road to Leura Oval in Camperdown to tackle the home side with an aim to repeat the result of the round two meeting between these teams.

Back then the Roos won the game based on a sound defence that held the Magpies to only one goal by halftime and a total of three for the entire game.

The pressure on the Magpies forwards was immense as the Blue and White was hard at the ball all day as they refused to allow Camperdown an easy possession.

That same pressure must be applied today as the Kangaroos go in search of its third win for the season.

The opening four rounds of the season saw the Roos carry a 2-2 win-loss record into round five and the win column hasn’t been added to in the prevailing six rounds.

Camperdown has one extra win than its visitors, so these teams are evenly matched, although the Magpies did run Terang-Mortlake to 28 points last week in an encouraging performance.

The Roos have been without spearhead Darcy Russell for much of the season due to injury, but the big man played last round and ended with a couple of majors to his credit and will be much better today for the hit out.

Hamish Cook was held goalless against Cobden last weekend, but the high flyer should remedy that this afternoon as he goes in search of a bag of goals.

No doubt both these players will attract a tagger from the home side and possibly be double-teamed as the Magpies seek to shut them down such is the threat they pose in front of goals.

Ethan Knight and Jack English had plenty of the ball against Cobden and they will look to have a bigger influence on proceedings today as they seek forward thrusts to set up the Roos forward line.

Taine Morris at centre half back will be instrumental to the Roos hopes of victory, as he looks to impose his presence on the game.

Cameron Pither, Jake Donehue, Harry McGinley, Will Povey, and Toby Hawthorne are expected to line up in the back line where there rebound ball will send the Roos into attack.
