Street stocks headline speedway program

WESTERN Speedway will roar back into action tonight, including round three of the MJS Street Stock Series, the Super Rod Tour, and truck racing will make a return to Hamilton after a lengthy absence.

With the first round of the street stocks falling victim to a cancellation, the series kicked off at Mt Gambier’s Borderline Speedway in December, with a 24-car nomination list.

South Australian drivers dominated the podium, with Anthony Beare showing a clean pair of wheels to take the feature from veteran racer, Carey Weston, with Nigel Reichstein taking out third spot.

Tonight the field has large list of contenders, with 28 drivers from South Australia and Victoria in the field, and although Beare  is in his usual brilliant form, it is still anyone’s race.

The nomination list includes nine South Australians, with Beare and Reichstein set for a rematch, and the likes of Drew Flatman, Denis Knowles, Keith Moore, Darren Flatman, Ben Weedon. Corey Crafter and Scott Merrett also flying the flag for their state.

The Victorian brigade includes Dean Jenkins, Jason DeGoldi, Melissa Crutchley and Steve Brook from Redline, Jack Jordan from Swan Hill along with Michael Smith and Jayden Bromley from Ballarat.

Paul Domberg, Jordan Ellifsen and Stefan Clark will represent Portland, while Ellen Vagg is from the Simpson Club, Wade and Albert Fell from Mildura, and Bradley Dickson will make the long trip from Nyora.

Andrew Jordan and Tyler Barton from Alexandra will complete the list of visitors, and of course our local lads, father and son team of Donald and Jye Irving, who will be out to make their mark at their home track.

A couple of beautifully prepared cars and plenty of determination should see them at the pointy end of the field.

Street stock racing has a large following of fans, and the format for tonight lends itself to plenty of action, with two heats for each driver, followed by a B Main, a pole shuffle and then the final will be contested amid 15 laps in one direction then a further 15 laps in the other direction.

The second feature of the night is the Super Rod Tour series, with three Hamilton drivers amongst the field.

Jamie Ackland will be driving HA7, a Niki body powered by a 350 Chev motor, Billy Grist will once again be behind the wheel of the HA23 in a Daihatsu/350 Chev, and HA96 Dane Court is in a Ford Prefect which is powered by a LS2 Chev.

Several of the visitors have also opted for the power of the 350 Chev, with Jamie May and Shaun Walsh in Fiats, Luke Cole in a Ford 10, Bob Wilson in a Honda.

Niki bodies are the choice of Jason Poustie, Stan Marco Senior, and Stan Marco Junior, while George Woolstencroft has a Diahatsu, and Paul Verhoeven will be in a Mini, and again all are powered by 350 Chev motors.

Luke Gilbert has a Mini with a LS1 Chev as the power plant, and Jason Kavanagh has a Fiat with a LS2 engine.

The rods are programmed for three heats each, followed by a pole shuffle, and a 20-lap final.

Rounding out the night, the Horsham based truck racers will be turning on the action with Nathan Bird, Wes Bell, Fletcher Mills, Luke James, Jaryd Carman and Tim Driller making up the field.

Racing is set to commence at 5pm and with further information is available from the Western Speedway Facebook page or the Western Speedway website.
