Walters becomes Victoria’s number one

THE Southern 500 Speedway was packed with the community around the Speedway Sedans Victoria circuit on Saturday night and when all was said and done, Kye Walters was crowned number one.

The track in Heathmere hosted the 2022 SSA Victorian Modified Sedan Titles with 10 qualifying races taking place in the lead up to the feature final.

Walters began his evening with a victory in heat A1, leading by more than two seconds, but dropped off in heat A2 where he finished in fourth.

One more chance to test out the recently refurbished clay track was presented in heat 3A in which Walters improved, placing third to book a spot in the feature final.

The final featured 20 drivers and when the 35-lap battle was finally completed, only half of the field would complete the distance.

At the front of the pack was Walters, flying in his Ford Falcon ahead of runner-up Matt Nelson.

Walters finished with a final time of 18:58.776, leading Nelson by 1.696 seconds.

Jarrod Waters rounded out the podium in third.

The feature final was a battle of attrition, with Nick Cockerill an early bolter for the opening handful of laps before being forced to retire.

Once Cockerill left the race Walters seized the lead for the first time and battling through lap traffic, extended his advantage ahead of Waters and Nelson who trailed closely.

With more drivers withdrawing as the race dragged on, Walters managed to open up a four-second lead over Nelson in second.

That lead was trimmed right back to fewer than a two-second break, however Walters would hold on in the dying moments to secure his first Victorian title. Across the other classes, Dehne Sparrow was the winner of the production sedans, Jayden Blomely came out on top in the street stocks and the standard saloons belonged to Chris Carvill.
