AN exciting double feature weekend of racing is in the books for the South Coast Drag Racing Association.
On Friday evening a strong crowd was gifted three hours of burnout competition as a part of Tyre Frying Friday.
The winner when all was said and done was Portlander Braden Phillips, snatching his first Friday night burnout win.
Spectators flocked back to Portland’s drags strip the following day for the South Coast Street Challenge where a field of 84 entrants battled it out for prize money.
After three full rounds of racing 10 racers remained unbeaten with three wins and the decision was made to run four rounds of Hot Lap eliminations.
Rules were set, with no refuelling or cooling off time in the pits allowed for any of the finalists, and in the end Dean Cleary came out on top in his Holden Torana.
Cleary was crowned Street Champion and won $2000 in prize money.
Runner-up was Andrew Waight in his Holden HQ Premier.
South Coast Drag Racing Association organiser Greg Holland said the club was over the moon with how the weekend.
“It was great couple of days for the raceway, the turnout was really positive,” he said.
“On the Friday everyone got stuck into the first burnout session we’ve had in quite some time, there were plenty of people who came along to watch a few tyres get shredded which was great to see.
“Young local man Braden Phillips got the win in his NANSPEC Corolla, and that was his first win at the club on a Friday night which was a fun thing for everyone to see.
“Everyone was back again on Saturday for the Street Challenge which just keeps getting more and more popular.
“The Street Cruise kicked things off with around 50 cars taking part in that voyage out to the Lighthouse checkpoint and back again.
“Once everyone was back at the track the racing kicked off with plenty of people up on the hill to watch and Dean Cleary ended up stealing the show.
“We had a few minor setbacks cause delays to racing during the day but thankfully we had an amazing team of volunteers of hand who quickly got out there on hands and knees with towels mopping up oil and getting the show back on the road.
“Everyone who helped out at the club over the weekend did a great job and it was really appreciated.”
