LOCAL driver Robert Braune will travel to Bathurst over the Easter weekend to compete in the Bathurst 6 Hour endurance race.
The invitational race is one of the biggest endurance events with a record-breaking 70 cars expected to compete this year.
Braune will be joined by Terang-based co-driver Tony Moloney with the pair racing in Braune’s newly bought BMW m135i.
Last year’s event was won in a BMW which inspired the Braune’s purchase.
The car was purchased specifically for the Bathurst 6 Hour event, which is a different model to Braune’s usual racing car.
Robert Braune’s wife, Rita, who has organised most of the preparation for the event said it is a bucket list item for them to tick off.
“We usually do circuit racing which is in a different car than what will be used for the six-hour event,” she said.
“We race all over the country in different states but in the Improved Production racing, this is the first event we have competed in like this.
“We purchased this car with the Bathurst 6 Hour in mind – it’s something we’ve always wanted to do.
“Once COVID hit last year it was something to work towards and because this event is something you have to be selected for we made sure we put in a lot of hard work and then finally got accepted.”
The event has eight different classes with a variety of car models entered. Braune will be competing in the A1 class with world class drivers in attendance across the other categories.
V8 supercar driver Shane Van Gisbergen will be driving as well as TV personality Grant Denyer.
The race, as it’s named, runs for six hours with each driver expected to drive three hours alternating in one-hour stints.
With plenty of preparation in the lead up to the event Braune says both her husband and Moloney are keen to get on the track.
“We’re going to be ready – we’ve had a lot of people helping us in the lead-up and we’re vey grateful to all of them,” she said.
“Robert has raced at Bathurst before so he’s excited to just get there and have a go.
“It’s been on our bucket list so we’re just excited to be there and experience the whole event.”
Racing will begin on Friday with three practice runs scheduled throughout the day.
The qualifying races will take place on Saturday afternoon with the official six-hour race kicking off on Sunday at 11.30am.
The event will be broadcast live on Stan Sport.
