Major funding for drags

THE South Coast Drag Racing Association’s facilities are set to undergo a major redevelopment after receiving a whopping $428,917.18 in the latest round of the Community Motorsport Program.

Sport and Recreation Victoria is funding the program which will be spent on the building and installation of a new pavilion and associated works for the Portland-based track.

The funding comes as a huge win to the club who has sourced majority of their current infrastructure through community support and donations of second-hand facilities.

South Coast Drag Racing Association secretary Scott Cleary said this is monumental for the association which has put so much of their own time and money into its operation.

“This funding is just huge for us; most of our stuff is what we’ve built or things that have been contributed so receiving this make such a difference.

“In our early days there was about 10 guys who took out a loan to build what we have now so it’s nice to get some support outside of the club.”

The funding will provide new clubroom facilities that will be up to modern standards with increased accessibility, a new carpark, plumbing and more.

Association president Andrew Smith said the funding will change what the club is capable of.

“We are over the moon to have received this funding and it is going to make a big difference to the club and what we are working with at the moment – for sure there are exciting times ahead!” Smith said.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Sport and Recreation Victoria for their support through the Community Motorsports Program.

“I would also like to thank Scott Cleary; he has been working hard on this application for months and we are very thankful for his efforts which have allowed us to secure this funding.”

The club is working towards an installation between January and April 2023.

The Community Motorsport Program is part of the Labor Government’s $7.4 million Racing Into a New Era for Motorsport initiative.
