Grass track series gets underway

THE Portland Motocross Club held the first round of their grass track series on Saturday in Mount Richmond with plenty of strong competition making for a big day.

The grass track series holds a number of rounds throughout the year at different grass tracks in the region.

With nine different classes on offer there was plenty of riding showcased throughout the day with secretary Sonja Goldby saying it was a great start to the series.

“The day went really well across the board; people were really happy with the grass track and the feedback was great,” she said.

“The grass tracks are a bit different and people like it because there aren’t any jumps so it’s a bit easier to ride.

“Out at the Heywood track the jumps can get a bit technical so the grass track is great for kids to get involved.

“We’ve got some more kids jumping on board and that gets their parents involved too which is really important for boosting volunteers.”

With some conflicting events on the calendar, including the Kelpie Muster Festival, Goldby said numbers weren’t as high as usual but they’ll look to boost them for the coming events.

“Numbers were probably down to previous years but that had to do with the Kelpie festival being on and other events,” she said.

“We’ll look to have the second round in July sometime, with Dwayne’s Day on the Dirt which happens every year, but we want to make sure it’s a weekend that works.

“We have a calendar but we are trying to be fluid.”
