Gallops - Big nominations for Coleraine Cup Day

THE 2022 Coleraine Cup meeting has received big nominations for its major race day of the year on Friday.

A combined total of 347 horses have been nominated across the eight listed races, including 66 for the Coleraine Hotel Maiden 1400m, meaning two divisions of that race could be run.

The cup headed at the top of the weights by the Symon Wilde trained Aurora’s Symphony has attracted 30 nominations.

Plenty of depth at the top end of the weights may see one of the strongest editions of the race in recent years.

Six-year-old Aurora’s Symphony won the Colac and Launceston Cups earlier this year, and after one run this preparation for a midfield effort at Flemington, it would lead out the field with 63kg if the stable decided to accept.

Former VRC Derby favourite, Thought Of That, is next in the weights and his best form and style of racing would suit around the tight Coleraine circuit.

Trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, the former Group 3 Norman Robinson winner as a three-year-old would go into the race six weeks after an even first-up effort at Caulfield.

Adelaide Ace, formerly trained by Lindsey Smith, and now under the care of his foreman Shane Jackson would also be a major player if he started.

A last start fifth in the Mildura Cup followed on from a second in the Swan Hill Cup, a race he also won a year earlier.

Tasmanian stayer, Sir Simon trained by Scott Brunton is an interesting nomination.

The nine-year-old has wet track form and winning form out to 2100m.

Some nice progressive horses also get into the race on the minimum weight.

Of these, Red Phantom, Holster, Hopkins, Keats and Shultzy can all figure prominently if they accept.

Local trainers, Trudy Cottier and Matt and Louise Cooper have nominated Delightful Scoop and The Fire Trap respectively for the race.

With the weather looking to be on the improve following a wet weekend, the club will be hoping to have the track racing in the low slow range if not better.

Final fields will be released this morning.
