ANIRISHMAN banked his second country cup's win in the space of a month, winning the $30,000 Penshurst Cup on Saturday.
In what could only be described as crazy weather, his owners had to be extra patient before adding this trophy to his St Arnaud success from last month.
On a track that was downgraded to a Heavy9 following the previous race, rain and lightning in the area delayed the start of the race by nearly an hour.
Despite having not won on a heavy track previously, the six-year-old was able to out-slog his rivals to record his fifth career win.
With Harry Grace riding, the race panned out perfectly when runaway leader, Clever Man, provided the gelding with a 'bunny' to follow in the race.
Grace, who claimed two kilograms as an apprentice, rode a patient race and always knew his main dangers were behind him.
Distress signals went out about 600m from home for Clever Man, leaving the winner in front with Never Again and Muntham Missile the only challengers.
As the field straightened for home, Muntham Missile started to struggle, leaving it as a two-horse battle over the last 200m.
The determination of Grace and Anirishman enabled the pair to win by just over one length.
For Neil Farley, who rode Never Again, it was a bitter pill to swallow, opting to jump off the winner, a horse he had ridden at its previous two starts.
Unlike Farley, most punters got it right supporting the winner heavily to start the $2.50 favourite.
Trainer, Pat Ryan, now has his sights set on next Sunday and trying to replicate a Jericho Cup Day victory of last year.
For Grace, the win was the second leg of a double.
State Of Maine in the Pat Hassett Memorial Maiden Plate over 1400m was his other success for Warrnambool trainer, Tom Dabernig.
Two seconds and two thirds made it a super consistent day for the young rider.
Melissa Julius and Daniel Bowman also combined for a stable double.
Julius, who began her riding career at Penshurst in 2015, has always been prominent at this meeting, with wins on It is Me and Honour De Hero continuing that success.
It Is Me was having his first start and made light work of his opposition, winning the Dunkeld & District Bendigo Bank Maiden Plate over the 1284m trip by seven lengths.
Honour De Hero completed the double in the following race with a first-up win in the Cottrills Plumbing & Page Electrical BM58 Handicap over 1284m.
The rain and deteriorating track coupled with a drop back in class played out perfectly for Franquin, an all the way winner of the 1400m Kelly Memorial BM52 Handicap.
Trained by former Hamilton mentor, Britt Goodwin, the veteran galloper landed his eighth career win after a lovely front-running ride by 3kg apprentice, Tianni Chapman.
Rounding out the meeting, dual licence holder Jackie Beriman scored a first-up win on Wewanda, while prominent stables Tony and Calvin McEvoy, along with Andrew Bobbin took home winners with Zoulane and interestingly named Princess Pancakes respectively.
