Harness racing

A FABULOUS afternoon of harness racing action was held last Sunday at the Hamilton Trotting Track where hotly contested fields recorded quick times on the track, which was in fantastic condition for the last meeting of the season.

The premiership award winners will now be finalised with presentations taking place at the clubs’ major event for the year, the Hamilton Pacing Cup Day.

Race five, The Bendigo Bank Pace was taken out by the locally trained, Asmileandawinx for Shannon Edwards and was driven by James Herbertson.

Starting favourite for the race ($2.15), Asmileandawinx worked out of the gate to lead the field, winning by a short half head on the line from Doc Harvey who was closing in late and locally trained Vegas Prince in third who had raced without cover throughout.

The Jim Barker trained Presidentalchange was impressive winning race six, the Grand Central Hotel Pace, coming from last on the final turn to swoop down the outside and go on to win by two metres.

Driven by granddaughter Jackie Barker, the gelding recorded his eleventh win in a fast time of 1:55.8 from a consistent Hanover Jack in second place and Charging Bull in third.

Matthew Craven had another successful day at Hamilton with a training/driving double.

His first win came with Young Bluey in the Fitchett’s Plumbing 2yo Maiden Pace, and he later scored with Gotta Smudge in the Matthews Petroleum Pace, recording an exceptionally fast mile rate of 1:52.4.

All attention now turns to the Matthews Petroleum Hamilton Pacing Cup day on Sunday, January 15, 2023.

The club is working hard to prepare for a big day on course with marquees, live music, kid’s activities, show bags, pony trots, HRV hero horses, food vans and plenty of giveaways.

A bus will also be available to the public in a bid to get people back to the track!

It promises to be a massive day of fun for the whole family, so save the date this school holidays.
