Quick turnaround for drags

JUST a fortnight after the South Coast Raceway roared to life for the first time this summer, the track will once again be back in action, with tomorrow seeing the Wild Bunch Wars hit the tarmac.

But first the association is also hosting a test and tune at the track today for all-comers to come down and have a look or even participate, according to South Coast Drag Racing Association spokesman Ben Phillips.

It’s an exciting move for the association as it seeks to encourage involvement in the sport.

“We’re opening up the track to anyone who wants to have a go at drag racing in a safe, controlled environment,” he said.

“We encourage anyone and everyone to get down and give it a try.”

Phillips said he expects another fantastic day of drag racing for Saturday’s main event, with plenty of entrants expected to take part.

“We’ve currently had about 65 entrants, plus we’re expecting more will register at the track… it should be a great event,” Phillips said.

“Conditions should be ideal for drag racing… we’re really looking forward to it.

“We’re expecting around 100 racers all up on the day… so plenty of action to be on display.”

With the GT Coupe Nationals being hosted in Mildura in less than a month’s time, Phillips said that drivers will be using this event as a test meeting for that major upcoming event.

“It’s great because it encourages more teams to come out to our event… they can kind of use it as a warm-up for the national event,” he said.

The association will also be hosting a live music event after the day’s proceedings, with Nick How to perform, and spectators are encouraged to stick around after the racing has finished for the day.

The Wild Bunch Wars kicks of at 10am tomorrow morning.
