Motocross day a huge hit

THE Portland Motocross Club had more than 200 riders hit the track on Saturday for their ride park day and pit bike under lights event.

Despite some rain late in the week the track held up with motocross enthusiasts travelling from near and far to get a ride in.

Event organiser Jamie Nickless said it took a while to get the night underway but it was well worth it in the end.

“We had around 200 entries for the whole day which was just unbelievable,” he said.

“That was for both the ride park day and then the pit bikes later in the night.

“We’re hosting one of the Victorian State Titles rounds in about two weeks so there was a lot of people during the day that turned up to suss out the track and get an idea of it.”

The night racing was a hit for all ages with kids and seniors taking to the smaller pit bikes on the second track.

“It was such a good night; we had heaps of spectators and all the kids were just having a ball,” Nickless said.

“That’s what it’s about, giving those up and coming juniors something to compete in and get excited for.

“It was hard work in the lead up but a lot of fun when it all comes together.”

The weather also held out for the event with the wind dropping off later in the day and the track soaking up some rain from last week.

“It was really muddy to start with but once there was a few laps in the track was fine,” Nickless said.

“It all came good in the end and there was some really good racing happening, even the old boys enjoyed themselves.

“Now we just go bigger and better next time.”

With just two weeks until the club welcomes almost double the racers for the Junior Victorian State Titles round, the club will work to prepare the track.
