THOROUGHBRED racing returns to Casterton today, as the club is the beneficiary of a transferred meeting from Hamilton.
The local track was deemed unsuitable to race on by Racing Victoria stewards last week following a month of big rainfall.
It’s another disappointing loss for the Hamilton club, but thankfully for participants in the state’s south-west, Casterton has been made available once again.
In June the club also hosted the transferred Apsley Cup meeting, albeit a week laterm but they did lose one of their own jumping days when heavy overnight rain left surface water on the track.
Today’s seven-event program looks an even card with horses from over the border making for an interesting mix of form with the local runners.
Warrnambool-based trainer Tom Dabernig looks likely to saddle up two of the first three favourites.
British Angel led on debut at Murtoa, only to be gunned down late by promising Paul Preusker-trained colt, Eccentric Nature.
The filly should again race on speed despite drawing the outside barrier, a big asset around this tight circuit.
Mighty George has shown plenty of promise in both runs this campaign and looks hard to beat in the 1800m Maiden.
He ran into Sirius Black, an easy four-length winner last weekend at Warracknabeal but did run home strongly from back in the field.
The extra 200m of today’s trip looks ideal.
Kelvin Bourke has been having an outstanding run of late, training five winners from his last nine runners.
The Geelong-based mentor once again has descended on Casterton, a track he landed a double on two weeks ago.
Masina and Alassak gave him that double, and both look outstanding each way chances again today.
Another Geelong training counterpart in Vin Malady also travels west with two very good winning hopes in Magic Bertie and City Escape.
The best of the local hopes appears to be Bomber’ Kiss after a strong second placing here a fortnight ago for Matt and Lousie Cooper.
Jess Constantine will saddle up an interesting runner that comes out of a very strong form trial held here late last month.
Although beaten six to seven lengths by two Lindsey Smith gallopers, namely Mawallock and Light Of Rose, those two gallopers look well above average.
Mawallock has won two of three career starts, while Light Of Rose won on debut at Warrnambool by seven lengths on Monday.
Sitting three wide during the trial, the five-year-old mare is worth an each way ticket at double figure odds.
Finally, Gunsablazin’ is here again in the final race for former Hamilton trainer, Brittany Goodwin.
He let me down last start, but was not beaten far, therefore gets one last chance in the ‘get out stakes’.
Good punting.
