Hamilton celebrates 150 years of racing with Friday meet

THE Hamilton Racing Club celebrated 150 years of its racecourse and grandstand last weekend, commencing with a successful race day on Friday.

On Saturday, the celebration concluded with a more formal evening with speakers including Robert Hunter, John Donnelly and Chas Armytage who have all spent time in many official capacities within the club.

The overall presentation and reflection of the stories that helped build the club over the journey was very well received by all that attended.

On race day it was the Warrnambool trainers who dominated, with six of the races were won by beachside trainers.

Lindsey Smith dominated with a treble, while Matthew Williams, Peter Lafferty and popular veteran horseman, Quinton Scott, also chipped in with a win.

Smith landed his treble early, winning three of the first four races including the two Highweight events.

Jenni Castelforte and Diwali did enough to narrowly win when ridden by Will Gordon and Tom Ryan respectively, followed by the impressive It’s Lit for Fred Kersley.

A slow-maturing gelding by Tarzino, It’s Lit the winner of the Autopro Hamilton Maiden Plate can progress into a nice middle-distance/staying type as he continues to learn his craft.

Smith's success continues his great record at the track.

Peter Lafferty looks to have found a nice galloper in Bromfield, and strong winner of the Sinclair Wilson Maiden Plate.

Following two runs earlier in the year, the four-year-old was sent for a spell before his first-up win over the 1100m sprint trip.

With Lester Grace riding, he knuckled down well in the last 100m to eventually get the better of Tremamore and race favourite Anthophila.

Tauri lived up to his short quote with an easy five length in the CoggerGurry Maiden Plate.

It was the first leg of a riding double for Tom Prebble who also scored later in the day on Hampton Palace.

The win was the beginning of a big couple of days for Quinny Scott who also won with Love ‘N’ Run at Warrnambool on Monday.

The Armytage Family Handicap looked the best race on the program and proved to be just as exciting with Matt William’s gelding Loose on Gin narrowly edging out All Hands trained by Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr.

Jamie Edwards and Danny O’Brien took out the final two races, winning with Come Along Jeffrey and Hampton Palace respectively.

Jess Eaton and Linda Meech were the winning riders.

Our attention now turns to the iconic Dunkeld Cup meeting with a preview in this Saturday’s edition of the Spec.
