WITH spring almost over, today brings the last of the local country cups with the Penshurst Cup in the spotlight this afternoon.
The schedule has expanded to eight races after strong nomination numbers, with a big day of racing expected.
Penshurst and District Racing Club secretary, Brendan Kelly told The Spectator that some recent upgrades should add to the appeal for racegoers today.
“Preparations are going well, the track is in good order,” he said.
“We have had a new renovation, we’ve improved the camber on the bottom corner, so it should race pretty well and present well.”
With a warm day forecast and little rain this week, Kelly said a Good4 was still the aim on the day to ensure a strong day of racing.
“I think we will be able to make a Good4, If it is going to be a bit hot on the day, it might improve to a Good3,” he said.
“It is an eight race card now, they’ve split a race, so good strong fields which will make for a good day of racing.
“Ticket sales are on par with most years, we are happy enough with how it’s going.
“It is going to be a warm day, so plenty of shade out here.”
With the raceday aimed predominantly at families, the usual activities will be available on the day.
“It is a pretty standard formula, it is a family day out,” Kelly said.
“Lots of good viewing spots, there will be kids activities, bookmakers and fashions on the field.
“I think registrations for that will be open from 1.30-2.30pm.”
A competitive race meet is also on the cards after strong numbers nominated for the once-a-year meet in Penshurst.
“Every field has a maximum of 10 with some emergencies,” Kelly said.
A strong crowd is expected with tickets still available to purchase at the gate.
“Tickets are available for walk ups,” Kelly said.
“I would think it will be pleasant enough here on the day, you’ll be able to find shade in the grandstand, betting ring or under a marquee or umbrella.
“We are just looking forward to another good race day.”
