THE Surry District Tennis Association hit the court for its second round of play on Saturday with some mixed results throughout the A grade competition.
It was a close battle between Heywood Woodies and Lawn Red, with the Heywood side finishing off strong to claim a 4-39 to 2-31 victory.
There was a mixture of experience and youth out on court for both teams with both sides winning one set each early on.
The third set saw an impressive contest play out with Cindy Kollar and Jason Edwards closing out a tiebreaker set against Bruce Elijah and Jane Booth, 9-8.
Lawn Red managed to level the sets in the fourth but Heywood Woodies finished strong to claim the win.
Heywood Woodies player Jason Edwards, who this season is teaming up with daughter Amali Edwards in the side, said the competition has different look this season but is offering new opportunities.
“The competition is a fair bit different now and what’s left of A grade has combined with A reserve so there’s different skill levels,” he said.
“At the end of the day we’re trying to keep the competition going and just have some fun out there.
“My daughter plays in the team with me, so it’s been really nice to play with her.”
With different levels of players across the board Edwards said there is plenty of variety in the competition.
“It was good to come up against Bruce (Elijah) on Saturday, he’s played a lot of tennis and is still competitive – we had a really good set with Cindy and I against Jane and Bruce,” Edwards said.
“Karyn (Barbary) also had to come on at the end of our match because Bec (Elijah) got injured, so it was great to see her back on the court and her daughter Maggie is also playing.
“That’s what it’s all about I think, getting people on the court.”
• In the other clashes Lawn Purple had a huge performance in their opening match, after a bye in round one, defeating Heywood Lions, 6-48 to 0-11.
The experienced combinations of Leah Sandeman, Peter Rayner, Cameron McCallum and Carrie Templeton was too much to combat for a young Heywood Lions outfit.
• Lawn Yellow also had a strong performance, getting the better of Heywood Roses, 4-47 to 2-30.
There were some close sets early on but Lawn Yellow made the most of their mixed doubles to run away with the match.
