A BRIGHT future is on the cards for local tennis star, Eve Wear, after she helped South West Region win the 18-and-Under title at the Tennis Victoria Region Teams event staged in Bendigo recently.
At only 13 years of age, Wear was the youngest in the team, but that didn’t stop her from winning her share of matches.
For a player so young, she has had to develop quickly, as her prodigious talent has evolved.
Wear competes in the Hamilton Lawn Tennis Club men’s competition on Tuesday nights, competing strongly, with the 13-year-old aware there are no easy points on offer.
“The men certainly don’t take it easy on me, and that’s just how I like it, as I need to be pushed to my limit each time I play and it’s a good hit against them and they make me work hard,” she said.
The local competition was perfect preparation for the teams event in Bendigo, where the players play singles and mixed doubles in each rubber.
South West was drawn against Loddon in the preliminary stage and was defeated by a single game, such was the closeness of the contest, but both teams won through to the final the next day and South West trounced their opponents.
The locals didn’t even have to play the final mixed doubles rubber, such was their dominance, with Loddon unable to catch the score.
“I have played tennis since I was eight years old and played at region level since I was 10, so I knew what to expect at the event,” she said.
“I like to hit up against other players or my Dad at least four or five times a week, as I want to keep pushing myself as I get older and play as high as I can.”
