HAMILTON Table Tennis Association was in the thick of the action, hosting the Mid-Western Open for junior and senior players at the weekend.

A total of 81 senior and junior players converged on Hamilton with the junior championships staged on Saturday, while the senior championships were held on Sunday

Ruby Rankin had a very busy schedule over the course of the weekend, entering the junior tournament for her age group, along with the senior tournament where she battled it out in the Under-21, and Open Women sections, before competing with her dad, Daryl, in the Mixed Open Doubles.

The father-daughter combination performed brilliantly to win the Open Mixed doubles event from fellow Hamilton association members, Jedda Hardcastle and Youssef Malicdem.

Ruby won through to the Under-11 semi-final, had a runner-up finish in the Under-11 Mixed Doubles, the Under-21 Open Women’s doubles, and the Open Women’s singles, while she claimed the Under-21 Women’s singles title, an incredible achievement for the 10-year-old.

Katie Wooldridge was victorious against Rankin in the Open Women’s singles, and she combined with her sister, Heidi, to win the Open Women Doubles crown, while Heidi was runner-up in the Under-1000 Points section.

Fitzpatrick himself tasted success in the Over-30s Men’s Doubles, teaming up with Nathan Coombes to claim the title, while he was runner-up in the Under-1900 Points Singles.

Nathan Coombes was another local player to win multiple titles over the course of the tournament, collecting victories in the Over-30 Men’s Singles, along with his Over-30s Doubles success.

Billy Fitzpatrick was successful in the Under-1000 Points Singles, with the 12-year-old also reaching the quarter-finals of the Under-13 Boys events.

Marcus Gellert, Elijah Gellert, and Mohammad were also representing the HTTA in the senior championships, while Sineth Hansa, Darcy Walsh, and Braxton Neaves breasted the tables at the junior championships.

The Hamilton association used not only its regular competition room but also had six tables set up on the main basketball court, which provided a great spectator viewing spectacle with supporters able to sit in the grand stand and watch multiple matches at once.

Players from across Victoria entered the event with Melbourne based players being predominant there were also entries from Gippsland, Portland, Warrnambool, and Mount Gambier, as well as the locals who enjoyed the opportunity to play at this level without having to travel big distances.
