Tehan takes on trade portfolio

WANNON MP, Dan Tehan is the country’s new trade minister after prime minister, Scott Morrison announced a cabinet reshuffle last week.

Mr Tehan had served as education minister since August 2018, but was promoted to trade, tourism and investment minister on Friday.

He said it was an honour to take on the new portfolio, which has taken extra importance following recent trade tensions with China.

“Australia is a trading nation. Our prosperity has been built on trade and our future relies on it. Trade creates jobs, drives innovation and underpins our economic growth,” Mr Tehan said.

“Trade is a mutually beneficial relationship between nations that enhances friendships, understanding, respect and co-operation.

“I will engage, listen and work tirelessly to advance Australia’s trade interests.”

Mr Tehan will take over the role from Simon Birmingham, who was appointed finance minister in October.

The role will see Mr Tehan return to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, where he was an officer in the late 1990s.
