THE fun, friendship, and adventure of Girl Guides will be on display at the Hamilton Girl Guide Hall tomorrow when the group opens their doors for their Come and Try day.
Girl Guide leader, Polly Porter said the group hoped all families with girls aged between five and 17 years old would visit the hall between 10am-12pm to see the supportive and exciting learning environment of Girl Guides.
Ms Porter said the group provided a safe and welcoming environment that pushed young girls out of their comfort zones and provided them with lifelong skills.
“It’s all about developing young girls and women into confident leaders,” she said.
“We do a lot of teamwork and leadership development but it’s also about girls challenging themselves as well through earning badges.
“It’s a great environment for them to meet people outside their school.”
Ms Porter said the group faced difficulties attracting new members during the COVID-19 pandemic due to Guide sessions moving online, but were now excited to get back out in the fresh air and show the community what Girl Guides was all about.
“Since Covid, it’s gone a bit quiet with numbers so we’re looking to welcome new girls and show them that it’s something to do where you can be social in the outdoors and meet friends,” she said.
“We are very focused on the environment and helping others, we like to do activities outdoors if we can, and also incorporating traditional skills such as tracking, knots, campfires, camping, and hiking.
“We also do a bit of craft, cooking, and indoor activities too.”
With the Hamilton Girl Guides currently in their 99th year, Ms Porter said she was hopeful they could gain new members prior to the 100-year celebrations next year.
Anyone wanting to attend the Come and Try day is encouraged to wear casual clothes, enclosed footwear, and bring a hat and drink bottle.
The Hamilton Girl Guides meet every Tuesday afternoon at the Guide Hall and offer a free three-week trial for new members.
