Historic homestead opens gates for Easter market

CHATEAU Kolor custodians, Gregor and Mary-Louise McDonald, will welcome the public to their grand estate next weekend, as they host the property’s inaugural Easter Market.

Sitting at the base of Mount Rouse in Penshurst, with clear views of the Grampians, the bluestone home was designed by Melbourne architect, Joseph Reed of Reed and Barnes in the mid-1860s.

The home’s original owner, Irishman, John Twomey, laid the foundation stone in 1868.

Today, the McDonald’s hope to breathe new life into the stunning property, while honouring its past with an events business.

Soon the homestead will play host to weddings, forums, and retreats, with local small businesses and artisans invited to work with the McDonald’s to make events at Chateau Kolor special.

Mrs McDonald said although she had never done anything like this before, she was keen to invite people to enjoy the property.

“It’s something that you really need to share, we’re proud of it, we’re honoured and thrilled to be a custodian at the moment,” she said.

“I have food vans and things, so people can come in and have a cup of tea and enjoy the day.

“I haven’t planned tours of the house this time but could be made available by appointment.”

Market goers can explore the grounds of Chateau Kolor from 10am-2pm on Sunday, April 16, and wander through the property’s stunning orchards, lavender walkways, rose gardens, and admire the breathtaking Moreton Bay fig trees.

On the day, there will be something for the whole family with arts and crafts, food vans, live music, providore, plants, bric-a-brac and much more on offer.

Stallholder applications remain open and can be sent to info@chateaukolor.com.au.
