THE Grampians Winemakers Association has been urging farmers and landowners in the region not to burn off just yet and check with vineyard neighbours to see where they are at with harvest.
Smoke from any source can have a devastating impact on grapes at this time of year – it has been reported that crops are only at about 30 per cent of last year.
Waiting a few more weeks until the end of harvest, likely the end of April, before burning would be appreciated.
All burn-offs must be registered at firepermits.vic.gov.au or call 1800 668 511 or email burnoffs@esta.vic.gov.au.
