A weekend of celebrations

THE Sesquicentenary celebrations continued at The Hamilton and Alexandra College last weekend with past and present students, staff, parents, and friends gathering to honour the College’s history and aspirational future.

The jam-packed weekend started last Friday with the launch of the school’s history book titled, ‘Defying the Odds’, written by former staff member of 43 years, Neil MacLean.

Attendees of the book launch were also treated to an exhibition titled, ‘A million stories’, which provided a walk down memory lane and a look at the school’s rich history.

The celebrations on Friday came to a close with The Sesquicentenary Musical Showcase which saw close to 500 people watch performances from current students, Old Collegians, staff, and members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, which College principal, Dr Andrew Hirst, said brought The Kantor Family Music and Performing Arts Centre to life.

“It was a wonderful opportunity for members of the community to see our talented musicians perform,” he said.

School tours and a competitive exhibition hockey match consisting of Old Collegians versus current students and staff, kicked off the celebrations last Saturday, with the Sesquicentenary Gala Ball held on the main College oval later that night.

300 guests attended the preeminent gala event, with The Master of Ceremonies, Dion Love travelling all the way from America to be involved.

The festivities came to a close last Sunday with the annual College Community Golf Day held at the Grampians Golf Club.

Mr Hirst said it was a celebratory weekend that connected the College community across many generations.

“People travelled from near and far to celebrate their connection with The Hamilton and Alexandra College,” he said.

“It was a privilege to speak to alumni and past and present parents over the course of the weekend, and it is clear that College builds a strong tie with everyone that graces the school.

“One keen hockey alumni from the Class of 2019 flew from Sydney to Mt Gambier and drove to Hamilton to play in the exhibition match and returned in the same day.”
