MS Readathon challenge returns

LOCALS are encouraged to register for the MS Readathon - an August reading challenge for people of all ages that raises funds to provide support services for children who have a parent living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

MS is a progressive neurological condition that affects the central nervous system and interferes with nerve impulses from the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves.

While it affects people differently, common symptoms of MS include challenges with vision mobility and speech, however many cases are often invisible.

Currently there is no cure for the condition, with the nationwide MS Readathon encouraging even the youngest of Australians to help where they can and raise money to go towards funding programs such as MS Family Camps and Fun Days.

As part of the readathon, locals register online and read as many books as they can in August, logging their progress as they go, with prizes available along the way.

Southern Grampians Shire Council library services coordinator, Kelly Pitt-Lancaster, said the Greater Hamilton Library supports everyone wanting to participate in the MS Readathon or a similar reading challenge and encouraged all locals to pick up more books.

“The library always welcomes patrons to bring in a hot coffee or chocolate, find a warm spot to sit and read, and be inspired by the programs and support our library staff can offer,” she said.

“With the Premiers’ Reading Challenge for children currently underway, booklists are available, with the option to order or borrow any of the featured titles.

“There are hundreds of brand-new children’s books on offer as well, providing resources for kids who are completing either this challenge or the MS Readathon.”

Ms Pitt-Lancaster said there was a wide range of books available locally, with options for people of all ages across all genres.

“The Greater Hamilton Library, together with the Mobile Library, contain approximately 22,000 borrowable items, including online options - ebooks, eAudiobooks, magazines, databases and movies,” she said.

“Along with regular programs and activities, there is always something on offer at your library.”

Anyone can register for the MS Readathon, with categories available for children, groups or schools, and people over the age of 18.
