Grampians chopper rescue

AMBULANCE and SES units were called to Dunkeld on Tuesday morning after reports a hiker was injured at Mt Abrupt (Mud-dadjug).

Hamilton SES volunteer, Bruce Humphries said he was one of the members from Hamilton who attended the scene to assist the Dunkeld unit and Ambulance Victoria (AV) with extricating the injured hiker.

“A crew of three (from Hamilton) responded in support of the Dunkeld unit - they were the primary unit for that event,” he said.

“They were pretty close to the top of Mt Abrupt … it’s about a 3.3 kilometre hike to the top.

“Fortunately, the air ambulance was able to airlift the causality off the mountain.

“We were on standby in case we needed to hike up and bring the patient down with a stretcher.

“We were just out there to support Dunkeld with the extraction of this injured hiker if required.”

An AV spokesperson said paramedics were notified of the incident in Dunkeld about 11.40am on Tuesday morning, with an emergency response helicopter, mobile intensive care ambulance, and ambulance attending the scene.

After the hiker was safely removed from the mountain by the emergency response helicopter they were transported to Hamilton for treatment.

“A woman in her 50s was taken by road ambulance to Western District Heath Services, Hamilton in a stable condition suffering an upper body injury,” the spokesperson said.
