IN recognition of more than four decades of volunteer service, Portland’s Charlie Debono has been awarded the Emergency Services Medal in this year’s Australia Day honours.

As well as countless road rescues and regularly answering the call to join crews to help disaster hit areas, Mr Debono was the first Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) dual unit controller and was instrumental in saving the Heywood unit.
