THE Hamilton & District Legacy Fleece Show again presented a magnificent display of district fleeces on Thursday with large numbers of entries, particularly in the Fine and Medium wool sections.

Judges at this year’s show were David Whyte from Elders, Hamilton, and Gary Simpson from Sheep-Trax consultancy, Dunkeld, and gave their congratulations to all involved in the collection of a large number of fleeces.

The overall quality was very impressive particularly in consideration of the very wet spring last year.

Particularly noticeable was the style, whiteness and tensile strength of the fleeces and organisers were glad to see the show so well supported by many growers.

The Champion Fleece of the show came from Nareeb Nareeb owned by the Beggs family; the 13.9 kilogram fleece in the strongwool Merino class of 60s visual quality showed stylish lustrous fibre.

The fleece had great character, was very sound, along with a high fleece weight - the aggregate score of this fleece totalled 90 points.

The Most Successful Exhibitor of the Show was L. G. McKinnon and Sons, and the Most Valuable Commercial Fleece of the Show was exhibited by Trevor Mibus and family with a fleece value of $115.46.

Hamilton and District Legacy secretary, Mal Eales, said he was thrilled with the outcome, especially given the circumstances that forced a reschedule.

“Even though we were forced to postpone from December to now, it’s worked out,” he said.

“We’re going to have it next year a month later because of the shearing.”

Mr Eales said the judges were extremely pleased with the display.

“They’re the same two judges for a few years and they reckon it’s been the best show that we’ve had for a long time - quality and quantity,” he said.
