Schoolkids meet their community leaders

GLENELG and Southern Grampians Local Learning and Employment Network (GSGLLEN), together with major sponsors South West TAFE and Coleraine and Dunkeld Community Banks, hosted the 2023 Young Leaders Launch last Wednesday, May 3.

The Young Leaders Program officially started in 2021 and is based off the highly successful Future Leaders Program that was founded by Portland Aluminium in 2005 to order showcase the many different industries in the community, to bring youth back into the community after their tertiary studies and create a workforce of inspiring leaders.

The launch provided students an opportunity to meet with their local business mentors, including Glenn Howell, Noel Kennedy (Melville, Orton & Lewis), Dan Tehan MP, Melanie Roll (Gen Health), Bronte Gorringe (ANZ Agribusiness & Strive Ag), Josh Frichot (Hamilton Myotherapy), Emily Anderson (SGSC), Will Barber (Warrnambool College), Lauren Davies (Aquila Physiotherapy) and Tam Weibacher (Good Shepherd ECL).

Successful students of the 2023 program are Georgia Barnes (Baimbridge College), Riley Millard and Sam Bendeich (Good Shepherd College), Amelie Hiscock (The Hamilton & Alexandra College), and Charlize Fairbairn, Tayla Lewis, Tana Nedziwe, Ruby Wardlaw, Ruby Hayden-Simpson, Hayley Cumming and Amy Shelly (Monivae College).

The Young Leaders Program in the Southern Grampians Shire is offered to Year 10 and Year 11 students or equivalent. The program runs from April until October and students take part in a variety of events, program activities and online sessions/workshops.

It provides an amazing opportunity for youth in our community to participate in activities that increase confidence, build transferable skills, knowledge and leadership capabilities and introduces students to different career opportunities within the region. The program introduces students to different industries, allows opportunities for networking and challenges the way they think about the world of work. The program is helping to create a potential workforce and also helping to build the social capacity of our community.

GSGLLEN executive officer, Anne Murphy, said “it’s wonderful to be able to partner with so many local organisations to help promote careers in the Southern Grampians and give students the opportunity to build connections and have firsthand experience into their chosen career paths”.

The Glenelg and Southern Grampians Local Learning and Employment Network’s (GSGLLEN) role is to broker sustainable strategic partnerships between key stakeholders in order to improve education, training and employment outcomes for young people in the region. The GSGLLEN is financially supported by the Department of Education and Training.
