INCREASES in rental charges by as much as
100 per cent by Caltex Oil Company is forcing
a number of its service station operators out of
business. The increases, which the president
of the Victorian Automobile Chamber of
Commerce described as being introduced
“unannounced and overnight”, is being felt in
Hamilton and one Caltex operator is “getting
out”. Mr. Don Schultz, who has been associated
with service stations for 23 years and operates
the Caltex service station opposite the Botanic
Gardens in Hamilton, said yesterday that he
was getting out by “mutual agreement”. He
said he had written to Caltex complaining of
the increase rental he was asked to pay but he
had not received any acknowledgement. “I told
officials that I more or less refused to pay the
increase and they said if I did, I would have to
go.”
HAMPDEN League officials believe they will
field a stronger team against Western Border
on Saturday week than the one which last
month coasted to a 17-goal win over Kowree-
Naracoorte. Hampden selectors have made
seven changes to last month’s combination,
with the main improvement being the inclusion
of three top players who were unavailable for
the Kowree-Naracoorte game. League officials
remember how an over-confident preparation
two years ago cost Hampden the game at Mt.
Gambier, and this time the team will train on
Sunday at Camperdown and next Tuesday and
Thursday at Terang. Western Border players
attended a social at Casterton last night and
will have their first training session at the
ground on Sunday.

THE glamor world of magazines is made up of
a lot of behind-the-scenes slog, according to
the designer of a brand-new magazine. Former
Cavendish woman, Louise Brinkmann, is the
designer of the new monthly magazine, ‘Inside
Soap’, which hit the news stands for the first
time this month. Daughter of Cliff and Cheryl
Brinkmann, Louise grew up in Cavendish and
attended the former Hamilton High School
where she studied science and art subjects,
“but I knew I would go and do art”. After leaving
Hamilton, she attended Ballarat University
where she obtained a Bachelor of Art in design.
“While I was studying, I found my forte with 2D
(two dimensional) design, for example, page
layout,” she said.
WESTERN Border Football League will be
aiming to win it’s first country championship
grand final in 11 years when it clashes with
West Gippsland tomorrow. The division two
Booze Less Country Championships grand
final will be held at Hamilton’s Melville Oval,
which is in reasonably good condition at this
stage of the season. South Gambier duo, Adam
Salmon (broken collar bone) and Simon Jones
(knee), have been ruled out, because of injury
while Millicent’s Brett Nitschke has left the club
and could not be considered for selection. The
final team was expected to be named last night
following the last training session, to be held
at Melville Oval. Western Border coach, Wayne
Fletcher, said the players were reasonably
confident of victory.
