IT was another great climb for crisis response dog Ember, racing from the bottom to the top of Melbourne’s Crown Metropol in 7.7 minutes.
On September 2, the Labrador participated in yet another stair climb, the 10th Annual Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb (MFSC), challenging the Crown Metropol’s 28 floors.
Ember placed 63rd out of the 720 firefighters participating overall and second place in her age category, 18 to 39 years.
As for the fundraising side of the event however, Ember’s owner CFA Leading Firefighter Natalie Brindle said they were a little disappointed with their third placing having raised a total of $11,368.
“We have very high expectations,” she said.
“We're going to try and come first in the individual fundraising next year, that's our aim. So, we've got 12 months to fundraise now.
“She's officially retiring from all the other ones because they're full-on events like 96 floors, but the Crown Metropol is only 28.
“I'm happy with her, provided she's healthy of course, to have one more go and beat the top fundraising guy.”
This year the event successfully raised more than $630,000 to go toward beneficiaries Lifeline, Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation and 000 Foundation.
Donations are still open on the MFSC website, and can be made on Ember’s donation page firefighterclimb.org.au/climber/embertheservicedog/
“It's just a really good event to be part of because it has such a good vibe,” Ms Brindle said.
“Everyone's there having fun and doing a good thing for charity.
“The new charity this year was Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation and that's a good one because unfortunately, a lot of firemen do have cancer.
“If we can get them some money, they might be able to provide the general public with better treatments for cancers.”
The duo will be focusing on this particular event for the next 12 months so they can reach their goal of first place. For now, Ember is just enjoying the new shiny medal around her neck.
