Local plastic recycler takes out prestigious award

HAMILTON business Sustainable Plastic Solutions (SPS) took out the Regional Development Victoria (RDV) Leadership and Innovation Award in Melbourne last weekend.

This was a sub-category of the 7News 2023 Community Achievement Awards, which encourages, acknowledges, and rewards the valuable contributions that individuals, communities, and businesses make throughout Victoria.

The award was presented to SPS owners Matthew and Elisha Nettleton by Western Victoria MP, Gayle Tierney, last Friday night.

SPS is the only remote, regional recycling company in Victoria that pelletises and compounds materials.

The local business also worked in partnership with the Southern Grampians Shire Council (SGSC) on a haybale twine recycling project earlier in the year which generated great traction from farmers in the area.

SPS has made a staggering contribution to environmental sustainability in the brief eight-month period that the business has been in operation.

In this time, more than 3000 tonnes of hard-to-recycle plastic waste has been diverted from landfill and processed at the Hensley Park location.

They are currently operating 24 hours a day with in-house resources to quickly fix equipment breakdowns and have pulled together a growing team of locals who are trained in the unique skill of plastics.

They are striving to become the first carbon-neutral plastics company in Australia and hope to eventually process 14,000 tonnes of plastic.

SPS received a prize package worth more than $1500, including a complimentary membership to The Career College valued at $594 as well as a trophy.

All winners from the awards will also be featured on a congratulations TV advertisement that will be aired across Victoria on the Seven Network.
