MEMBERS of the Heywood Riverwood Social Support Group have been busy crafting roses to display at the Wood Wine and Roses Festival tomorrow.
Since October, some of the older residents of Heywood who attend the Heywood Senior Citizens Building, have been creating roses with a variety of materials such as yarn and tissue paper, using techniques such as crochet and colouring in.
The roses will be displayed in the Riverwood building’s front windows during the festival tomorrow, for all to see.
Social support worker Lee Sheedy said they have at least eight local residents attend every Tuesday and Thursday from 10am to 2.30pm.
“Usually, the mornings are spent working on the craft activities for the Wood Wine and Roses Festival,” she said.
Now, this week the participants have been busy decorating the windows.
“They've worked really hard for it, have been enthusiastic and it's a good chance for the clients to be engaged in the community.
“When they do an activity like this, they have a vested interest in it.
“I’ve been very impressed with them, and their skill level is amazing.”
Judy Dron has crochet more than 100 roses for the display, and Leonie Wittenberg has put together all the paper roses herself.
Wooden carved items Ms Sheedy purchased at the Old Time Wood Days last year will be displayed in the window with the roses and some wine bottles.
“I think it'll look great because they put in so much work,” Ms Sheedy said.
