THE annual Classics by the Bay Show ’n’ Shine was a hit last Saturday, with a huge turnout of cars, bikes and other vehicles.
Portland Bay Classic Vehicles president Craig ‘Angry’ Dennert said they had 324 vehicles turn up to the foreshore.
“The number of comments we get that this is just a fantastic show that they feel comfortable, and everyone is polite, is good,” he said.
“Everybody who comes through that gate - we try to be friendly to, so they feel invited.”
Actors and stunt bike rider from 1979’s Mad Max had plenty of attention, selling autographed pictures from a stand next to vehicles from the film.
“Every time I looked up, there were four or five people waiting to get photos,: Mr Dennert said.
“It was more than what I would have expected. Even the guys themselves said ‘this is one of the busiest shows we've ever done’.”
The club had 22 of their members working on the day, with the help of the Lions Club, Rotary Club and Naval Cadets.
With the money raised from the show, they gave Rotary $700 for working the barbecue, Lions for $300 coordinating the parking, and the Navel Cadets $500 for coordinating the gate, he said.
Mr Dennert said he is hoping to have raised roughly the same funds as last year’s show to donate to the Coast Guard.
“I reckon it was pretty well on par to last year,” he said.
The show received positive feedback from visitors and locals.
“People keep saying they love coming back here, that it’s one of the best shows to go to, you feel part of a family, you're not isolated.
“Happy customers and happy faces on our members, so it’s all good.”
