THE Australian Government will provide an unlimited number of means-tested living allowances for needy secondary school students this year. Federal Education Minister, Mr. Kim Beazley, told the Spectator yesterday the new scheme would operate immediately. The new scheme provides means-tested allowances up to $304 a year for students in the last two years of secondary school. Application forms are now available from the regional office of the Australian Education Department in all capitals. This year, the new scheme will operate in conjunction with the Senior Secondary Scholarship Scheme. Total cost of both will be at least $14million.

THE Western Border Football League has asked district councillor, Mr. Jo Collery, for a ruling on players being transferred within the league. Millicent is trying to gain the services of inter-league flanker Dennis Blowes, while East Gambier is trying to “pinch” former Hamilton player Greg Patterson from Casterton. Top league officials I have spoken with this week are divided in their interpretation of the rule which provides for footballers playing with the club in whose radius they reside. Blows has been transferred by the South Australia police from Mt. Gambier to Millicent. Patterson has been transferred by his bank from Hamilton to Casterton. Should it come out later that East approached Patterson this this poaching will certainly raise a storm of protest from clubs this side of the border.

SACKED Glenelg Water employee, Pat Kempton, is taking legal action against his former employer over his dismissal. His union, the Australian Services Union (ASU), confirmed Mr Kempton was taking legal action. ASU’s assistant national secretary, Tim Lee, also said Glenelg Water had told the union it was taking legal advice. This information was given in a reply to a letter the union wrote to Glenelg Water, protesting at Mr Kempton’s dismissal. Mr Kempton said yesterday he still was unable to comment on any matters surrounding his dismissal, including potential legal action. Mr Kempton was sacked after a three-hour board meeting on February 2. The board has refused to state the reasons publicly, saying it was an internal matter between the employee and the water authority.

THE toss of a coin all but ended Hamilton’s chance of reaching the Melbourne Country Week division three cricket grand final, with losses on Wednesday and Thursday putting the team out of contention. The Hamilton and District Association representative squad finished fifth out of eight teams on the division three ladder, with Traralgon and Ferntree Gully scheduled to contest the grand final yesterday. Hamilton suffered its first defeat of the week against Traralgon at Ormond on Wednesday when losing the toss on a sticky wicket saw Hamilton batting first and being skittled out for only 38 in 11.3 overs. In reply Traralgon made 294 after being 3-15 before the pitch dried out. Despite this result, Hamilton still had a slim chance of reaching the grand final, but batted poorly when chasing 110 against Yarra Valley on Thursday and lost by 20 runs.
