Set the stage and rosin up your bow

THIS Monday will be the moment of truth when violinist, Nicholas (Nick) Hoskyns faces the Australian Music Examination Board in Melbourne.

17-year-old Nick has been working hard towards this day throughout his musical journey.

The nationally recognised Associate Diploma (he will be examined for) has required sophisticated expression and musical understanding.

Nick said he’ll be happy if he completes the exam successfully, but the young musician won’t stop there.

He added, “I just like the violin – so I’ll continue to play it – that’s really were my satisfaction is.”

He was first introduced to the violin at the age of seven through a strings program at The Hamilton and Alexandra College (THAAC).

He loved playing the violin so much that he decided to continue with it.

A conscientious student, Nick has recently been currently working through components of the Victorian Certificate of Education in music studies while being a school captain at THAAC.

He has also played basketball at a state level in the past.

With a busy schedule, Nick has had to be an early riser.

“I usually come to school early and practice (the violin),” he said, “that way I can mold everything else in after school.

“It’s all about routine – it’s the way I fit it in.”

Nick also said that it’s been lovely to watch the sunrise while playing with his violin teacher, Mr Ben Singh.

“I enjoy playing Bach a lot in the mornings.

“He wrote these Partitas and Sonatas for solo violin - the music is perfect - it’s just right.”

Nick admires contemporary musicians such as renowned violinist, Hilary Hahn.

“I also enjoy watching (the musical YouTube duo) TwoSet Violin videos,” Nick added.

If successful on Monday, the years of perseverance will have been worth it, and he will have gained an Associate Diploma in Music – yet another string added to his bow.
