Lighting up the lagoon

THE trail around Fawthrop Lagoon will be a river of neon on Saturday (May 18) when Portland Parkrun participants celebrate a special event.

Event director Kay Antony encourages regular runners, joggers and walkers and newcomers to “light up the lagoon” by wearing neon to celebrate the group’s eight-year anniversary.

“There’ll be a coffee van for the first time – plus free cake! Everyone is welcome,” she said.

“I’d also like to shout out to regular Parkrunners to bring along someone who normally doesn’t do the Saturday morning event to see why we love starting our weekend off with the Parkrun.”

The 5km two-lap lagoon loop attracts on average 60 participants each Saturday and up to 80 in the warmer months. Many are out-of-towners who come to Portland just for the free, timed, volunteer-run event.

Many bring dogs on short leashes or babes in buggies, and around a third of Parkrunners walk the 5km.

Start time is 8am from the barbecue area at the end Hood Street.
