Henty Highway update

LOCAL roads campaigner Jason Bendeich hasn’t given up on his long-standing campaign to see more and better maintenance of roads in the Western District, especially the Henty Highway.

On Thursday he again visited the intersection of South Boundary Road with Lowan MP Emma Kealy.

He said this section of road was fixed only 18 months ago but had already started to lift and is incredibly bumpy to travel on.

“It’s only going to get worse during winter,” Mr Bendeich said.

While he said he was pleased the intersection of South Boundary Road with Hamilton-Port Fairy Road had been attended to, there were further sections within only 20 metres that were not attended to where the road is particularly broken and will also get worse over winter.

He said it was an 18-month campaign to get that road fixed and had sent numerous photos to VicRoads.

Mr Bendeich said the great thing was that Southern Grampians Shire Council had fixed the council section of South Boundary Road.

“So, Council’s done their bit ... you’ve got council keeping up their end of the bargain, with their link roads between the Highways but VicRoads are not doing theirs.

“VicRoads know about this section of road (Henty Hwy / Sth Boundary Rd), I’ve sent them photos.”

Ms Kealy said her concern was for road users and said cars were still expected to be roadworthy, but roads are not carworthy.

“To meet that threshold to be able to claim the $1500, that’s really difficult to meet,” she said.

“There’s been a 17 per cent cut in road management funding over the last four years.

“VicRoads do the best they can with the money they’ve got.”

Mr Bendeich concurred that he said VicRoads had a huge job maintaining the network with a constrained budget.

“That’s right,” Mr Bendeich said.

“They (VicRoads) said they feel for (road users) but said we just don’t have the money to fix everything.”
