HEYWOOD real estate agent, Mr Reg Hedditch, has warned young couples against considering buying a home or property now. Mr Hedditch said it would be economically disastrous for young people to commit themselves to such investments during the credit squeeze now affecting the Western District. He also said all people in the district would feel the squeeze in the next few months. Mr. Hedditch is president of the South-West District of the Real Estate and Stock Institute. He said yesterday the credit squeeze now operating was serious, although it had not yet affected most people. “But the result of absurdly high interest rates will be felt by everyone in the community in the next few months,” he said.

CRITICISM by some Portland-Port Fairy District League officials that Sunday’s Western zone team to meet Collingwood u.19 was all in favour of Hamilton, was unfounded. P-PFDFL president and a zone selector, Mr Bob Luehman, said yesterday that of the list of players made by his league, the P-PFDFL was entitled to have only one in the team. This week the Mininera League also said it would not allow Gavin Finnegan to play against Collingwood as he was needed for the Mininera team to meet P-PFDFL on Monday. Some P-PFDFL officials expressed disappointment and even disgust this week when the final 26 players to meet Collingwood included only one from their league.

THREE generations of the Howlett family, and now Murray Davis, have diligently tracked Dergholm’s rainfall for years – 100 years in fact. Hezekiah Howlett started detailing Dergholm’s rain in 1899, something he was to do for about 15 years, before passing the baton onto Wilfred Howlett, who carried on the tradition for half a century. Russell Howlett followed in Wilfred’s footsteps, writing up the rainfall for another 17 years, before Murray Davis took on the job in 1982. Murray, a wool and prime lamb producer, has been doing it ever since. The Dergholm farmer says he finds the job of gauging the rain for the Bureau of Meteorology to be enjoyable and interesting.
