Amazing race for an awesome woman

THE Countdown is on for Portland’s very own Amazing Race on July 28.

Organiser Jorja Romein is keen to see as many people as possible join in the fun event, which is for a serious cause.

The race aims to create awareness of breast cancer as well as raise funds for local lady Michelle Romein’s ongoing treatment and operations.

Michelle fought hard during her first diagnoses of breast cancer back in 2017 with high doses of radiation and chemotherapy to prevent it spreading. Michelle is a strong woman who, throughout her cancer journey, continued to work at the local IGA and put a smile on everyone’s faces even when she was hitting rock bottom.

Last September she received another blow with Severe Stage 4 Breast Cancer in her right breast and immediately underwent an emergency mastectomy in Warrnambool. She now faces further extensive treatment to ensure the cancer doesn’t return. This will include lots of follow-up appointments, endless tests and a reconstruction journey involving operations over two years in Warrnambool.

As soon as Michelle found out, her first thought was, “It’s back, what do I do now?”

Aside from family and close friends, she credits the Portland community as one of her biggest supports.

A ‘Sea of Pink’ walk from Portland to Bridgewater was held earlier this year and the Amazing Race is just one of many events planned by Michelle’s support team.

One of the organisers, daughter Jorja Romein, has some tips for those entering.

“This is a race that can be done in your own car, you will have to get out to complete challenges along the way. All challenges are made for all age groups, so no one is left out,” Jorja said.

“This is a team event, so get your teams together, pick a name and get those outfits ready. There will be loads of prizes to be won such as wooden spoon, best dressed and quickest team.”

You must register before the event and the cost is $30 per car (paid in cash on the day).

Lunch will be provided by the organisers.

For those interested in joining the fun of the race, registration needs to be in by July 26, you must have a car to complete the race, team names must be on the registration form and dressing up in a team theme is encouraged.

To register for the event go to the Facebook page – ‘Michelle's journey to beat breast cancer’ and click on the registration link.

A Semi-formal ball is planned for October 19.
