WANNON Shire Council will oppose any improvement works on the lower Wannon River. This is despite the investigating committee’s recommendation to go ahead with the work. Wannon Shire Council is the first of four councils to form a policy on the proposed works. Last night the four councils involved – Wannon, Glenelg, Dundas and Portland – were meeting in Coleraine to discuss the investigating committee’s report. The committee advocated the extension of the Glenelg River Improvement Trust’s boundaries to include the lower reaches of the Wannon. At Monday’s council meeting, in a motion by the president, Cr. Alex McLennan, and Cr. Anne Kealy, Wannon Shire placed on record its opposition to the formation of any river trust or extension of a trust designed or empowered to interfere with the natural formation or flow of the existing river.
