Port Fairy Repair Café this weekend

THE Port Fairy Repair Café will open its last event for the year this Saturday, November 16 from 10am-12pm for members of the community who would like some cherished items fixed.

The café run by a team of 14 ‘fixer’ volunteers opens on the third Saturday of every month except December and January at the Port Fairy Community House and encourages members of the community to bring in broken items they would like help with fixing.

With over 2500 Repair Cafés worldwide, the aim is to extend the life of items that would likely end up in landfill, while passing on valuable fixing skills and are fabulous social and networking events, not to mention free of charge.

Port Fairy Repair Café coordinator, Natasha Mills said it has been an event run by the community, for the community.

“This Saturday we’ve got jewellery, clothing, textiles, electrical items, mechanics, knife sharpening, and general and wooden household items,” she said.

“We try and as get as many things fixed as we can.

“People can rock up with items or book in, we try to fit everyone in.”

Visitors can enjoy fixing their items with equipment and help available while enjoying a complementary cup of tea and homemade cakes, biscuits and slices.

“It’s a great vibe – it’s very relaxed and very social,” Ms Mills said.

“It’s a free service, we are all volunteers – there is a donations box if people would like to contribute which goes back into the Port Fairy Community House and help supplies the group with materials and equipment.

“It’s a very welcoming space and we have a lot of fun.

Anyone who wishes to attend has been encouraged to book at bit.ly/3O0a3nh to get priority, however, walk ins are welcome.
