Market steadies while lamb numbers drop

LAMB numbers more than halved on Wednesday at Hamilton decreasing to 2250 and sheep numbers were also light at 330 head. Half the lambs were neatly shorn displaying good cover and quality with the balance of longer shinned lambs tailing off quickly in value. The sheep yarding provided freshly shorn Merinos with most weights and categories on offer. Not all operators were present and those on the rail were not fully active. There was no feeder or store competition. The market was firm to $5 per head softer with shorn lambs least affected.

Very good trade lambs 18 to 26kg to the trade were making from 320c to 400c/kg cwt with the top lambs making $111p/hd. Limited competition in the sheep market witnessed prices generally cheaper by $10 to $15p/hd with the heavy sheep most affected.
