Weekend Pennant

BOWLS season hits its peak on Saturday and this season the number and distribution of sides has changed somewhat compared with the past.

Division one has eight sides, division two has four, division three has six and division four has been split into two sections each having six sides.

The season will be only seven home and away games.

This week in division one the opening round fixture includes Portland v Memorial Red, Grangeburn v Hamilton and Balmoral v Memorial Blue.

Memorial offered to, and had a side move up from division two to fill what would have been a bye, and Heywood v Penshurst.

Division two matches will be Portland v Hamilton and Casterton v Macarthur; at least they will all make the finals.

Division three will be Hamilton Green v Portland, Grangeburn v Memorial along with Hamilton Gold v Coleraine.

Section one of division four has Casterton v Hamilton Green, Heywood v Macarthur and Penshurst v Dartmoor, to be played at Dartmoor because of the 70km zone affecting Dartmoor people travelling this way.

Section two includes Dunkeld v Portland, Grangeburn v Hamilton Gold and Balmoral v Coleraine.

It shapes up to be a fascinating season with fewer matches, increasing the importance of winning each and every week.

The men’s section triples, sectional games were played at Grangeburn and Macarthur on Saturday and the teams making it to the knockout were skipped by Des Pitts, John Wallis, Rick Angelino and Neville Trotman.

The knockout to be played on Sunday was cancelled due to the weather / green being under water at 9 o’clock so they will be rescheduled to a date to be decided.

On Monday the women’s singles were played at Hamilton to the last four.

There were 11 entries and the four left to play for the championship on the 29th of November at Hamilton are R Thomassen v C Dunn and H Burgess v A Rentsch.

On Sunday the sectional play of the men’s fours championship will be hosted by Heywood.

There are only six entries this year. Section 1, Des Pitts, John Rappard, John Wallis. Section 2, Richard Martin, Mick Swan and Tom Englezos.

The 60 and over pairs for both sections will be played next week with the women’s games at Grangeburn and the men’s at Hamilton.
