Sport spotlight: World croquet day, Wombwell weekly win

CROQUET

SIX senior players turned up to play on Saturday and it turned out to be quite a good day despite there being so few players.

Heather played against Jan and Yvonne in the first game and after a very slow start and the score being 5 to nil, Jan and Yvonne's way, Heather sparked up and really started to play some really good shots and ended up going down 7 to 5, leaving her run a bit late.

In game two Margaret drew the short straw and played Sandra and Joy.

This was a long game with some good shots coming from the three players and ended up going to a shoot-out and a win to Sandra and Joy, 7 to 6.

Game three saw Heather play two balls again against Jan and Sandra.

The game ended up being a bit one-sided with Jan and Sandra winning 7 to 2, Heather worn out playing two balls.

In game four, Joy was drawn to play the two balls against Margaret and Yvonne.

Joy played a super game and with some great shots came out on top, 7 to 3.

We are celebrating ‘World Croquet Day’ on Saturday, 7 May and we are desperately in need of new players.

So, if you have a couple of friends available, come on down and see what croquet is all about, join us in a couple of games, stay and have afternoon tea with us.

We do have a lot of fun and don’t take the game too seriously - it’s all about fresh air, laughter and friendship.

Arrive at 1.15pm for a 1.30pm start.

Hopefully the weather will play its part and the sun will be out.

GOLF

A FIELD of 18 players enjoyed a stableford round, with Nev Wombwell winning on a countback with 37 points from Ewan Herring also on 37.

We welcomed Ray Whillas (our new Elders manager) for his first game scoring a respectable 35 points with only three clubs in his bag.

I wonder what he might have scored if he had a full set.

Nearest the pins went to E Herring on the 2nd, B Malone on the 8th, M Faroe on the 13th, with K Bibby taking the second shot on the 9th.

The NAGA today was won by Oysters - try and work that one out.

We have been playing a composite course for the past few weeks as the works on the 12th and 14th holes are under way.

This will continue for a few weeks more until the new fairways develop, along with the new dam between the 14th green and the 12th fairway.

Anyone with SCUBA gear will be very handy, as I can see many balls going in the dam.

A reminder to all player to arrive on time so the draw can be made.
