Strong field for Little Ath's season opener

THE Little Athletics season is back underway, with a session at Island Park last Friday to get the next generation of local athletes ready and raring to go for the coming weeks.

The Casterton Little Athletics Centre’s newest members and more experienced were put through their paces in sprint running, shot put and the long jump and triple jump, as a warm-up before getting more competitive in the next meetings.

Centre president, Jeff Black said he was delighted with the meeting’s numbers, with dozens of families bringing their kids to the field.

“Really happy with tonight, we’ve got quite a few new families along,” he said.

“They all seem to enjoy themselves.

“(The) parents have been very helpful, helping out each week, because without them, we can’t run it.”

Mr Black also lauded the efforts put in by all the participants.

“The kids went really well – they’re all excited to finally get back on the track again and we’re glad to have them back again for this year,” he said.

Starting this week, the focus will be on timing and measuring each participant’s efforts as they strive to compete against themselves and continually improve on their performances.

The season runs through the rest of 2022 and into the first few months of 2023, with a break for the Christmas period in December.
