Weekend bowls season rolls on despite wintry weather

IN Divisions 1 and 2 high side scores were 75 and 74, with equal team high scores of 34.

The differences four shots can make when the competition is tight was shown in the Heywood versus Hamilton game.

Heywood, on top of the ladder before the game started, was defeated by four shots and as a result moved from position one to four on the ladder.

Obviously other results affected this as well.

The game results were John Angelino 11 lt Richard Martin 29, Ricky Angelino 22 d. Bill Satchell 15, and Mick Swan 20 d. Norm Pech 13, leading to a 53-57 result.

Memorial visited Casterton and the result swapped Memorials’ position with Heywood.

Gary Russell was defeated by Ken Evans, 13-22, Neil Shannon lt Des Pitts, 10-21, and Andy Alderton lost to Greg Hoggan, 10-30.

Portland at the old water tower defeated Penshurst, 66-55.

John Rappard 11 lt David Cook 34, one of the high team scores for the round, Bob Bowden 32 d. Ali Rentsch 12, and Peter Cottier 23 d. Trevor Landwehr 9.

Portland and Penshurst didn’t move on the ladder.

Then came Balmoral at home to Grangeburn for a two teams to one win and to move to the second rung.

Tom Simons 27 d. Robyn Thomassen 18, Chick Trotman 14 lt Ken Prewett 21, and Nev Trotman 34 d. Bert Partington 4.

So, for ladder figure clarity, Memorial is on top with 47 points, Balmoral 46, Hamilton 45, Heywood 45, Portland 44, Casterton 18, Penshurst with six points and Grangeburn has five..

Division 2

THERE was one small ladder change in the middle order.

Hamilton Green set up in view of the post office clock for Portland Gold to play in Gold’s second straight week as visitors.

Last time it was a draw with Hamilton Gold, but there was a fair bit of difference this time.

Jim Brody and offsiders scored 7 to Barry Huppatz’s team with 34; the other 34 score in the week’s database.

Denis Gay d. Richard Speers, 26-16, and Max Spiller wasn’t able to break the Tom Alexander record, losing 16-24.

Macarthur took on Hamilton Gold and had to take second spot on the result sheet, 57-61.

The four shots this time didn’t have a big effect on the ladder.

Carol Uebergang 10 lt Maurice Jolly 29, Jean Schroeder 17 lost to Trevor Schultz 21, and on the other side Anthony Bourke 30 d. Alan Crane 11.

Portland Blue and Memorial almost had the closest result of all games as Blue put up 60 to Memorial’s 63.

Reg Alexander 24 d. Gerry Watt 20, Alan Palmer 19 lt Leonie Buchanan 25, and Alan Litowschenko 17 lost to Peter Fasoli 18.

Ladder: Portland Gold 50, Hamilton Gold 50, Memorial 34 swapped with Portland Blue 33, Macarthur 15, and Hamilton Green 10.

Division 3

THE two games here led to a minor change in order of merit.

Coleraine 54 defeated Hamilton 49, as Steve Cooper 21 defeated Tom Storer with 12, Vern Spencer 15 lt Peter Clapham 21, and Bruce Armstrong 18 d. Bill Edge 16.

The second game was between Memorial and Grangeburn, the home side taking the points by a margin of 12. David Garnier 21 d S Hardy 11, Meredith Fredericks lt Phil Thomassen 21 and Tinkumsep Imbi d Nettie Ryan 25 to 15.  Ladder, Coleraine 45, Hamilton 33, swapped spots with Grangeburn 32, Memorial 18,

Division 4

IF you want fun and drama, this is the spot to be.

Again, a couple of mid ladder changes eventuated after some great games.

Balmoral 47 d, Hamilton Gold 34 - M. McInnes 25 to Kevin Buck 13, Kathy Simons 22 d. Norm Schwarz 21 (the most recorded figure in bowls).

Casterton 36 lt Coleraine 48 - Terese Sealey 14 lt Arthur Guy 21, Nancy Sharam 22 lt Robin Salamon 27.

Heywood was beaten by Penshurst by eight shots - Jan Hamblin 14 lt Ian McClean 22 and Thelma Hoggan 19 dw Basil Eales 19.

Grangeburn 27 d. Macarthur 16 - Peter Moore 11 dw Carole Dunn 11, and L. Foley 16 d. Mary Millard 5.

If one might elaborate on fun and drama for a minute, Dartmoor on top of the ladder visited and played Hamilton Green, which was equal second last.

The game was close all day and on the last end on the Neville Blackmore and Peter Holmes rink, it was do or die.

There were three Green bowls sitting on the jack when Peter Holmes played his first shot, moved them and pushed the jack sideways but was now six down.

Blackmore played his second and it made no difference to the score.

Holmes then played an up shot to hit the jack and appeared to be three up.

Appeared, because there was heaps of discussion about in or out of bounds, even to the point of a score card being used on the bank wall as a sighter and a player lying on the green looking along the boundary line.

After 10 minutes, the umpire was engaged and said it was out of bounds after using the scope.

Replay the end, and this rink result went to Blackmore.

Not all was over, as a couple of ends earlier on the Heather McIntyre-Ross Kerr rink, the latter held six shots, before Heather drew a great saver to cut it back to one.

You guessed it - Redeye played an upshot through a hole smaller than the bowl to get the saver, stayed there and picked up a seven.

The final overall score difference was two to the Dartys, but a great day highlighted by strong play.

Ladder - Dartmoor 47, Balmoral 47, Coleraine 42, Grangeburn 29, Penshurst 27, Heywood 24, Macarthur 22, Hamilton Green 14, Hamilton Gold 14, and Casterton 14.

Other news

THE sectional play of the men’s pairs commenced at Memorial on Sunday.

Commenced, being the important word as only two of three games were able to be played.

It was ‘bucketing down’ when the info came through.

As the program is crowded the final sectional games will be played next Sunday morning and the knockout in the afternoon.
